Reflexology

reflexologyReflexology is a holistic and complementary therapy based on the principle that certain parts of the body reflect the whole of it. These reflexes are found in all parts of the body and are responsive to pressure, stimulating the body’s own innate healing process. The stimulation of these reflex points help promote physiological changes encouraging homeostasis to all the body’s systems, resulting in better health. There are different techniques and approaches used in reflexology, however, the basic principle is the same in all. Subtle yet powerful, reflexology is becoming increasingly popular in the world of natural and complementary therapies.

What to expect from a reflexology session?

  • A Reflexology session usually lasts between 60 to 90 minutes.
  • The ambience of the therapy room should be relaxing.
  • The therapist will carry out a consultation.
  • The client should be seated in a comfortable position.
  • It is important that both client and therapist have an open attitude.
  • Once the client is comfortable the therapist will carry out an inspection of their feet.
  • The client is encouraged to participate by communicating the different sensations or painful points they feel throughout the duration of the session, this will help orientate the therapist in their evaluation.
  • The therapist will carry out the treatment according to the school where they have been taught and they will then communicate their observations to the client.
  • Once completing the session the therapist will communicate any conclusions they have drawn from the session.
  • The client and therapist will then establish the course of treatment needed, usually between 6 and 12 sessions.
  • The therapist will then proceed to give after care advice to the client.

A Reflexologist should never diagnose and should make it clear that Reflexology does not cure, but stimulates the body’s innate self healing ability. In this way it cannot interfere with conventional medicine, but can complement it.
